How did you vote this year? With so many states considering cannabis laws, how much longer can federal prohibition continue?
Some of these proposed laws just aren’t fair to the cannabis community. In California, we see Amendment 64 being biased towards corporate interests, as well as creating new crimes for simple possession of cannabis. This has created a huge grassroots movement from growers and dispensaries against 64… I don’t think it’s going to pass. Personally, this reminds me of the Ohio law from a year ago, which sought to create a monopoly of 10 licenses, one for each of the well-connected individuals who financed the bill itself. I don’t think it’s unusual that in the midst of all of these states trying to legalize, we’re seeing a lot of corruption trying to pose itself as a benevolent law. It’s obvious the corporations are trying to muscle their way in by taking advantage of voters who don’t know much about cannabis.
In my 10+ years consulting in this industry, I’ve never held my breathe for any of these laws. You will know when the right one comes along. The cannabis community will be your #1 indicator in these matters. Look to their blogs, social media, and industry leaders. The one thing I ask for, is for us to be aware of negativity surrounding legalization. Keeping something illegal and unregulated will never be good for you, or your profitability. Yes, you will need to pay a fee to get licensed, and yes, you will need to get your grow operation up to proper state standards. It’s hard work but it’s SO worth it to no longer hide from police.
If it’s fair, embrace legalization!
